Factors involved in the apparent large amount of interest probably include statements by astrophysicist Stephen Hawking on the potential hazards of contacting extraterrestrials.
His comments in a Discovery Channel documentary program have been covered by many journalists and media platforms.

According to accounts released Saturday, April 24, 2010, by the coordinator of an e-mail news and information service, officials of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) and other U.S. government agencies have been involved in security activities involving human-appearing extraterrestrial beings in the U.S.

Actor, writer and producer Nabil Shaban and UFO researcher and author Philip Mantle from the UK have now officially signed an agreement to co-write a screenplay and script for Mantle’s so far unpublished novel ‘Once Upon A Missing Time’. This fictional account of an alien abduction story from the UK has now been re-named ‘MISSING TIME’.

There are still those who think the abduction report of Howard Schirmer, the Ashland Nebraska policeman, is hallucination., His superior officer declared Schirmer to be dependable and truthful, and ruled out hallucination or dishonesty. Predictably however the Condon report found no basis for confidence that the UFO he claimed to see was physically real.
